Yesterday's Letter by Jessie Dolan Started December 5, 2000 This story is based on a song by 98 Degrees called Yesterday's Letter. I was listening to it in school, when inspiration hit. Anyways, here it is! Oh yeah, I altered one word of the song to make the story make sense. And at the end of the fic is how I imagined it all through school, as a music video. Picture manga all the way through this, cause that's what I did. "I wrote a letter yesterday Tryin to explain Couldn't find the words to say Cause you are so far away So far away" Chapter 1 Michiru shivered as she entered her dorm. She had just come back from the mailing room after sending a letter to Haruka Tenou. It had been a while since she had seen Haruka. After she went to college, she and Haruka had lost touch. At first, the letters were flowing back and forth. When she was 17, she had applied up for a college in the United States, and so had Haruka. "Where I go, you go." Haruka had said. Michiru smiled, thinking about it. Michiru got in, but Haruka didn't. They were both deeply disappointed, and Michiru had protested going to college. "We're a duet! Duets come in twos!" But Haruka had insisted she go. "You need it so you can get a good job and have a good life." Michiru started crying. "But a good life cannot be without you!" She buried her face in Haruka's chest. Haruka's arms wrapped around her. "Shh . . . you'll live without me . . ." The day came when it was time to send Michiru off to college. "I'm coming home every holiday." They kissed, then held each other at the airport until Michiru's flight was leaving. The holidays had been so busy, what with schoolwork and all, she didn't have time to go back to Tokyo to spend time with Haruka. Haruka had been really sad about it, but understood. Michiru's roommate, Heather, had asked Michiru if she had a boy friend. This was sometime after Christmas. "Not exactly . . ." Michiru had said with a smile on her face. "A crush? OOH! Tell me tell me tell me!" Heather had begged. Michiru bit her lip. "Well . . . " she went over to her dresser and picked up the picture of Haruka. Heather frowned. "Hey, that's that girl you talk about all the time . . . Haruka." Heather looked up at Michiru. "What does she have to do with it?" Michiru hugged the picture. "Haruka and I . . . are in love." Now, people in Tokyo hadn't been shocked when she told them, but they thought she and Haruka were a sweet couple. In Tokyo it's very very common to be a lesbian, and no one is prejudiced because of it. But in America it was much much different. Heather looked positively shocked at first. "You mean, you're a . . . not straight??!" "What's straight?" Michiru asked. Heather went to her room and opened her dresser drawers, and started throwing clothes in a suitcase. "Never mind, because you're a lezzie." Heather walked with her suitcase into the living room. "And I'll have you know here, we don't take to lesbians kindly." Heather walked to the door. "And to prove it to you, I'm moving out!" She slammed the door. Michiru started crying. "Haruka . . . ." The next day it had been all over school, and no one was talking to her, except the teachers. She told the teachers she was leaving, but because she was a good violinist, the teachers made her stay. And now, two years later, that's why she wrote the letter. She was going to become straight. But yet, she felt the teensie weensie little pain in her heart, after dropping it off in the mailbox. "I got a letter yesterday It's so hard for me to face That it had to end this way But my love will never change Will never change" Chapter 2 'Dear Haruka, I'm so sorry, but we can't see each other anymore. I guess long distance relationships just don't work. Tell Hotaru and minna-san konnichiwa for me. Gomenasai. You will find someone else and live without me. Love, Michiru Kaioh' Haruka stood, her hands violently shaking with the letter in them. And she started crying. Haruka Tenou never cried. "Why . . . " she sobbed. She fell down on the bed she had shared with Michiru. "Michiru I can't live without you!" Hotaru came in. "Haruka-papa?" Hotaru walked in the room. "What is it?" Haruka sat up, trying to look collected. But it didn't work. She collapsed on the bed again, crying. Hotaru looked scared. "Setsuna! Come quickly!" she ran down to the stairs, where Setsuna was running up. "What is it, Hotaru-chan?" she asked. "It's Haruka-papa!" Setsuna ran into the room and stopped. Haruka was crying on her bed, the one she had shared with Michiru. "Haruka, what's wrong?" Haruka pointed to the letter on the bed. Setsuna picked it up, and read it. Then her hand rose to her mouth. "Oh, Haruka . . . . . Gomenasai." she was truly shocked. "Setsuna???" Hotaru asked. "We won't be seeing Michiru-mama anymore." Setsuna said sadly. "Did she die???" Hotaru cried. "No, she didn't die. But we won't be seeing her anymore." Hotaru knew what Setsuna meant now. "You can just walk away But I don't feel the same My heart still beats for you breathes for you sings for you And these feelings will never fade I can hide my pain But I can never hide the way I feel for you" It was the next morning. Haruka had been in her room crying since she got the letter. She had the door locked and was never coming out again. "Haruka! Breakfast is ready!" Setsuna called from downstairs. "She was wrong. . . " Haruka muttered. "I can't live without her, and I will never find anyone to replace her. "Michiru why did you do this to me?!" she screamed. "I been talkin in my sleep About the way it used to be Girl I pray that you'll hear me So I can see you in my dreams Oh, in my dreams" Chapter 3 Michiru tossed fitfully in her bed. She still lived in the dorm by herself. She was having a very hard time sleeping. "Haruka. . ." she mumbled in her sleep. She grabbed at the sheets and twisted them together. Then she woke up. She sat straight up in bed. She regretted sending that letter. But what was done was done. She went back to sleep. It was Haruka! She was just as she had seen her last. They were on a cliff for some reason, Haruka was standing at the edge. Her hair was blown violently by the wind. "Haruka?" Michiru said. Haruka turned around. "Michiru . . . you were wrong." Michiru frowned. "Huh?" "I can't live without you. Goodbye." Haruka jumped off the cliff. "HARUKA!!!!!!!!!" Michiru screamed. "Michiru . . ." Haruka said, asleep in bed. She was talking in her sleep too. "Why did you do this to me!" she screamed. She sat straight up. She buried her head in her hands. Then she fell back and went to sleep. She was at a wedding. But who's? She walked into the chapel. The bride was already at the alter, with the groom. She was wearing a lovely wedding dress. "I now proclaim you husband and wife! You may kiss the bride." the groom did. Haruka smirked. The happy couple turned around, and Haruka was in for a surprise. The bride was Michiru. "Michiru. . . Michiru!" Haruka yelled. The bride stopped smiling. The guests stopped clapping. A noise like a record being stopped was heard. "Haruka?" Michiru said. "Who is this guy?" the groom asked. "This GUY, is her lover." Haruka protested. Michiru snarled. "Not anymore you aren't. I love Kuro now." she stepped down from the alter and walked towards Haruka. "You didn't actually think I'd stay with you after I moved to America, did you? You did? Oh, that's so sweet!" Michiru said sarcastically. Kuro walked down next to Michiru. "This is for ruining Michiru's wedding!" Kuro put two hands around Haruka's neck. At once Haruka felt the air get knocked out of her. This guy was strong! Haruka screamed. She woke up. She still felt that choking feeling. She was being strangled in real life! She looked down at her neck to see who it was. It was her own hand. "You are such a dork . . . " Haruka told herself. She sighed. "I'm not going to last much longer. "But I can't forget the words you said to move on with my life And no matter what I'll carry you inside" Chapter 4 "Cheer up, Haruka-san!" Usagi Tuskino and her friends were at the Hikawa Shrine, drinking smoothies outside. They were 17 now. Minako was slurping hers loudly. "Minako-chan. . . that's rude." Rei whispered. Minako got up from the picnic table and went to a nearby tree. "Minna, come here." Everyone except Haruka followed her. Minako noticed. "Haruka, stay there!" She turned to her friends. "She needs someone. I say we hook her up." She held the peace sign high up in the air. "As Sailor Venus, senshi of love, call me the Dating Cop!" "Dating Cop?" "Yes, Usagi-chan?" "I get it!" Usagi smiled. "We set Haruka up with another girl." Minako smiled. "You got it!" "I have this friend. . ." Makoto began. "Let the dating service begin!" Minako said triumphantly. Haruka was at auditions now. Somehow, she had let the girls drag herself into their dating service. 'Michiru did say I would find someone else . . . ' "And then Noko-chan said that she didn't call her, but we all know she did, and Una-chan got her bellybutton pierced, and she looks fab! And then. . ." Damn, this girl could talk. Haruka didn't like chatty girls, and that's why she liked Michiru. "You play the violin?" Haruka asked the next girl. "Oh! Yeah, I do!!!" This girl was loud. Haruka turned to Minako and glared. Minako laughed hesitantly. "Next!" "What's your name?" Minako asked. "Michiru. . . " the girl whispered. Haruka started coughing. "Next!" "What's your age?" Rei asked. "Fifty, and as young as ever! Fifty fifty fifty! I can kick!" The old brunette kicked high in the air. "Punch!" She threw a fake punch. "Split!" she nearly ripped her pants doing the splits. She got up. "Fifty. . . " Haruka stood up. "Definitely next!" "No." Haruka walked out of the garage. "It's no use." Haruka zoomed down the road on her motorcycle. Past trees, houses, everything was a blur. She was planning on killing herself. "A life without Michiru is not a life worth living!" she screamed. Those were her last words as she flew off full speed into the nearest ditch. And she took her helmet off before she crashed, so she could be sure she would die. "Sooner or later You're gonna realize That this type of love Happens once in your life So open your eyes girl And see what we could be Come back to me" Chapter 5 "Let's see what's going on in Tokyo tonight." Michiru logged on to the Internet, then went to the main Tokyo newspage. "Weather. . . stocks . . this just in, breaking news." she read on the screen. She clicked the 'Breaking News' link. 'A 19-year-old named Tenou Haruka drove her motorcycle off into a ditch a few hours ago. It is not yet known if it was suicidal. Miss Tenou is listed in the Juuban Hospital under extremely serious condition.' "Haruka. . ." Michiru tried to say, but no words came out. She ran into her living room and tried to get her shoes on, but she was shaking too hard. "Oh, screw that!" She slipped her sandals on, and ran down the hallway to the parking lot. She bumped into several people, causing them to fall over, causing her to get lots of rude yells. She got in her blue BMW in the parking lot. She sped all the way to the airport, and was lucky she didn't get arrested! When she got to the airport she ran up to the counter and slammed her hand down. "I need the next flight to Tokyo, NOW!!" she said, screaming the last word. "Y-yes ma'am, there's one leaving in a few minutes. $300." Michiru whipped out her credit card and practically threw it to the lady. The lady quickly scanne dit and gave Michiru her credit card and plane ticket. She ran to the gate and threw her ticket at the ticket- taker. Surprisingly, the plane was crowded. She took a window seat and sighed. An older man, in his fifties or sixties came aboard. Seeing there were no seats left, Michiru told him he could sit by her. He did. "Thank you, ma'am. May I ask your name?" he asked nicely. "Michiru. . ." she said absentmindedly. "Ah, you're from Japan. So am I. Kurochi Tama." he said, holding out his hand. Michiru shook it. "Kaioh Michiru." she replied. The pilot came over the intercom and said all the rules. "Please keep all electronic devices off until we reach the skies. You may only take your seatbelt off when the seatbelt sign goes off. Thank you for choosing International Airlines and we'll be on our way to Tokyo, Japan in a few minutes." Then the stewardess came around showed what to do if you're ever in a plane accident and Michiru wondered if Haruka was alright. She put her head back and heaved a sigh. Fifteen minutes later, they were up in the air. The man turned on a laptop, and went to the Japan News. They had a streaming video of the breaking news, and the man clicked on it. "Doctors say the girl might not make it-" the newscaster said, and Michiru knew immediately who they were talking about. Her eyes grew wide and she started crying softly. She couldn't help it. "Miss, what's wrong?" Tama asked. Michiru stopped crying long enough to choke out a sentence. "The girl. . .in the accident. . . my love!" She started crying again. "Ah, so Haruka Tenou is your girlfriend?" Tama asked. Michiru nodded. "How did you know her name?" "I'm a doctor at the Juuban Hospital, I'm on my way now. I was vacationing in Miami, Florida, when I got the call they needed me." Tama looked at the laptop again. "I suppose that's why you're on your way to Tokyo, to see Miss Tenou?" All Michiru could do was nod. "I. . . I think it was my fault she was in the accident!" "Now Miss," Tama said with concern, "accidents happen. It's never anyone's fault." "It's because of me she commited suicide!!" "You're sure it's suicidal?" "I know it's suicidal. I-I sent her a letter telling her I needed to break up. .." And Michiru was telling the doctor all of what had happened. She had to tell someone. 'They might have a chance of saving her.' She told him how prejudiced many people in America were, and that Japan was much better. "Ah, yes. People in America are very prejudiced, but you shouldn't have let it drive you crazy." Tama said. Michiru wiped her eyes with her hand. "You must think I'm so stupid. . . telling my personal life just like that." "No, no. It's fine." The next day, they were almost there. Michiru had cried her eyes out more, and Tama had let her check the Breaking News when she wanted. But there was no more news on Haruka. "Folks, we'll be landing in Tokyo in 15 minutes, please keep your seatbelts on until we land. Hope you had a next flight and again, thank you for choosing International Airlines." The pilot clicked off the intercom. "We're almost there." Tama was busy on his laptop. "Haruka. . ." Michiru sobbed. Chapter 6 "How is she?" Hotaru asked. They were in Haruka's hospital room. The doctor lowered his head. "It doesn't look good. Can any of you think why she would deliberately crash?" Setsuna spoke up. "She got a letter. . . a few days ago. From her girlfriend at college in North America. It was a break-up letter." "How close were they?" "Very. You never saw Haruka without Michiru, and vice-versa. If you got one you got the other. If-" Minako got cut off. Rei was drawing a line across her neck with her finger, as if to say "That's enough!" "Hmmm. Do you think she could live without her?" The doctor questioned. The girls didn't answer. Suddenly, the door opened, breaking the silence. "Michiru!" they all exclaimed. It was as if Michiru didn't hear though. One look at Haruka's pale body on the hospital bed did it for her. She crumpled to the ground and cried. "Haruka. . . I'm sorry. . ." "I take it this is Michiru?" The doctor walked over to her and helped her up. "Is-is she. . . dead?" Michiru sobbed. "No. Not y-" Minako got cut off again. "Ow! That hurt." Rei had elbowed her. Michiru walked over to Haruka. She sat down in the chair next to the bed. Makoto got up and opened the door, and motioned for the others to come with her. "She needs her time with Haruka-san." They left the room. Michiru held Haruka's hand. "Haruka. . . I'm so sorry about the letter. . . Can you ever forgive me?" Haruka was still. "If you die. . . I don't know what I'd do! Live, Haruka, live!" she started crying, and her tears fell on Haruka. She buried her head in Haruka's neck. "Michiru?" Michiru lifted her head up. "H-Haruka?" Haruka smiled weakly. "I told you I couldn't live without you. . ." Michiru blinked back tears of happiness. "And that's why I'm not going back to college. And starting now we're a couple again. Gomenasai, Haruka. Gomenasai." Haruka just smiled. Michiru got up and started jumping around, then went into the waiting room and screamed "She's okay!" All the girls were happy. Chapter 7 Two months later, Haruka and Michiru were at their mansion. They were watching tv. 'Everything is perfect again.' Michiru thought. 'How I could ever have let American prejudice get to me, I'll never know.' And at the same time Haruka was thinking 'How Michiru could have wanted to break up with me, I'll never know.' They gazed at each other, then kissed a long, sweet kiss.
